Back in the 60’s, each product category had about 4 dominant players who everybody bought from. Today, we have about 100 products or more fighting for audience attention. As the number of brands in the market increases, it’s more important than ever to create an instant connection with your audiences. Visual identity plays a vital role in forming emotional connections with customers. Your audience can be influenced to recognise, like, and prefer your brand through a well-thought-out, cohesive visual identity.
A well-designed visual identity looks appealing and conveys a brand’s story. Studies have shown that brand consistency and a cohesive visual identity establish trust, making your audience swipe right on your product each time they make a purchase. At Mellow Designs, we understand that building a visual identity is more than just selecting colours and logos—it's about crafting a holistic, memorable experience that resonates with your audience.
How do we do this? Let’s walk through the importance of a cohesive visual identity, key indicators that show it’s working, and the step-by-step process to build one—from concept to execution.
Why is a Cohesive Visual Identity Important?
A cohesive visual identity is the glue that binds all elements of your brand. Whether it’s your website, social media, packaging, or email newsletters, a strong visual identity ensures that every touchpoint feels connected and reinforces your brand message.
Here’s why it matters:
- Brand Recognition: Consistent visuals help your audience recognise your brand, even without your logo or name attached. This brand consistency across touchpoints reassures your customers that they are interacting with the same brand.
- Trust and Credibility: When you’ve come across a new brand online, you look for consistent visual identity patterns across the website, social media, and email. This is a basic trust check that you do as a customer. A consistent visual identity fosters this trust. When your brand appears polished and professional across platforms, it signals reliability and attention to detail.
- Emotional Connection: First impressions are important. A well-thought-out visual identity instantly connects with your target audience, conveying your values and your story. If a customer is able to see the authenticity in your story through the visual identity, then they are more likely to continue buying from you.
What makes a visual identity cohesive?
- Consistency: Unity is strength. Keeping the visual identity unified across all channels establishes brand consistency. Colours, fonts, imagery, logo usage, and other design elements should be kept consistent across all digital branding touchpoints, as well as on physical brand assets.
- Relevance: Your brand’s visual identity must be aligned to your brand story. If there is a misalignment between your story and how it’s depicted through your visual identity, your audience will misunderstand your brand. Ensure that your visual identity is relevant to your brand’s values and resonates with your target audience.
- Flexibility: This is an important factor when designing a cohesive visual identity. Your logo and other design elements must be adaptable to digital and physical assets without losing their core message. A visual identity design must be flexible enough to still ensure brand consistency across channels.
How do you build a cohesive visual identity?
Let’s take the example of a fictional luxury activewear brand, ZenWear, to explain the steps that go into designing a strong and cohesive visual identity.
- Decode the brand’s purpose
Visual identity design begins with brand strategy. You need to define what your brand stands for, why it exists, and how it is going to fulfil a customer's needs. Define the mission and vision statements as well. This will form the foundation of your visual identity.
For ZenWear, the brand's purpose is to empower women to feel confident and comfortable in their own skin through high-quality, functional, and stylish activewear. The brand vision is to become the leading luxury activewear brand for Gen-Z hipster, health-conscious women.
At Mellow Designs, we use Miro to create moodboards that support the vision and mission to create a concept for the brand. We’ve found this to be a great tool for collaboration and brainstorming.
- Mapping user personas and journeys
Understanding your target audience is essential for building a visual identity that resonates. Ask yourself: Who are we designing for? What are their preferences, lifestyles, and values?
To illustrate this with an example, ZenWear’s audience is affluent women aged 18–27 who prioritise both style and functionality in their clothing. They value premium quality, minimalism, and eco-consciousness.
At Mellow Designs, we use a Miro board to create detailed user personas to ensure that we understand who we’re designing for and what appeals to them.
- Develop Your Brand Story
Your brand story is the backbone of your visual identity. It comprises the user’s problems or desires, your brand’s offering, and neatly ties it into a story that will resonate with your audience. Your brand story should be the guiding light when designing a cohesive visual identity. It should embody your values and vision while engaging your audience on an emotional level.
For ZenWear, the brand story revolves around the idea of strength, comfort, and youthfulness. The brand story can revolve around a young, busy woman who needs flexible, comfortable, and stylish clothing that makes her confident as she goes from coffee meetings to classes/work.
- Design the Visual Identity
Now comes the exciting part: designing your brand’s visual elements. These include your logo, colour palette, typography, imagery, and overall style. The goal is to reflect your brand’s personality and values in these elements. These elements will then be collated in a brand guide to ensure brand consistency through the life of the brand.
For ZenWear, the visual identity will use bright colours to appeal to the youthful audience while maintaining minimalist sensibilities to appear luxe. Strength and comfort can be conveyed through smartly chosen typography, let’s say a sans-serif font.
At Mellow Designs, we use a variety of Adobe Suite tools to maintain the professional quality of our designs. The Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) is our go-to for designing professional-quality visual elements.
- Test Your Brand Identity on Sample Audiences
Now to sample the cake before selling it. Before rolling out your new visual identity, test it with a sample of your target audience. This helps you understand how well your visuals resonate and whether they evoke the right emotions.
For ZenWear, mockups of the logo, website layout, and packaging were shared with known friends and the client’s inner circle.
At Mellow Designs, we record these reactions to the visual identity using Loom. This allows us to revisit the recordings and understand the feedback better.
- Refine the Visual Identity
All good design comes from iterating on original ideas to better them. Take the feedback you received from the test audience and refine the visual elements. This strengthens your visual identity, making it more relevant to your audience.
- Implement the Visual Identity on Brand Assets
Once the final visual identity designs are approved, it’s time to implement them on all your brand assets. Brand consistency is when you apply the visual identity in a uniform manner across digital brand assets and physical brand assets. Digital branding is vital if you’re an e-commerce brand first. Digital and physical brand assets include your website, social media profiles, packaging, business cards, and any other touchpoints where your brand is present.
Summary
Building a cohesive visual identity is a multi-step process that starts with understanding your brand’s core purpose and vision and ends with a unified, consistent presence across all platforms. A strong visual identity not only creates brand recognition but also fosters trust, relevance, and emotional connection with your audience.
